GYNECOLOGIC PROCEDURES

Gynecologic procedures, Gainesville, Texas

Maintaining a healthy reproductive system often times requires medical intervention through the form of gynecologic procedures. There are many common conditions that can be treated, making it important to understand there are options available if you’re experiencing symptoms such as heavy menstrual cycles or persistent pelvic pain.

At Vitality Women’s Healthcare, we offer a wide range of gynecologic procedures that help to alleviate any discomfort or abnormal symptoms you may be experiencing.

When are gynecologic procedures necessary?

Millions of gynecologic procedures are performed every year in order to improve function of the reproductive system and to correct any abnormalities that affect the health of a patient. Many times, women are unaware that they are facing reproductive issues that can be corrected with medical treatment.

Common gynecological conditions include abnormal menstrual cycles, heavy periods, painful intercourse, urinary loss, and acute and chronic pelvic pain. Many of these conditions are treated with medication; however, a procedure is necessary in some cases. Seeking the proper medical treatment is essential to avoiding severe health complications in the future.

Patients who already have a diagnosis of a fibroid in the uterus, ovarian cysts, or are suffering from chronic pain caused by endometriosis, may require surgical treatment to correct or ease their condition and enhance their quality of life.

Conditions commonly treated

Minimally invasive gynecological procedures allow for things that are generally more difficult, such as a large fibroid that needs to be removed, or safely clearing out endometriosis which otherwise can be complex. Sometimes a minimally invasive procedure can even bypass the need for a hysterectomy. There are a variety of health concerns that can be treated to improve the quality of life for many women:

  • Endometriosis
  • Fibroids
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Cancer
  • Chronic pelvic pain
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease
  • Uterine prolapse
  • Abnormal bleeding

How Are Gynecologic Procedures Performed?

The three main approaches to gynecologic are the laparoscopic approach, operative hysteroscopy, and robot-assisted laparoscopy.

Laparoscopic Surgery

In traditional laparoscopic surgery, small incisions are made near the belly button, where a tube will be inserted. By pumping in carbon dioxide gas, your abdomen becomes inflated to give a clear view of your organs through the laparascope. Tools are then inserted into the same opening to perform the required surgical procedure to treat the gynecologic condition.

Operative Hysteroscopy

During a hysteroscopy, your cervix will be dilated by the surgeon to allow for the hysteroscope to be inserted. This reaches through the vagina and cervix and into the uterus. The light shone through the device will allow the surgeon to see into your uterus and fallopian tubes into the uterine cavity. Small instruments will then be inserted if surgery is needed.

Robot-Assisted Laparoscopy

In robotic surgery the surgeon places the laparoscopic instruments through the small incisions in the abdomen and then attaches these instruments to the arms of the robot. The surgeon then proceeds to the robotic console in the same room and controls the arms through the robot. This technology allows our surgeons to have a magnified 3-D perspective, similar to standing inside the body while operating, and the result is the ability to be able to see and do things that cannot otherwise be done. This is done with the da Vinci Robotic Surgical System.

Recovery and Downtime

Avoiding the large abdominal incision used in invasive surgery allows our patients to get back to their normal routine and daily activities within a week or two; however, this greatly depends on which procedure you undergo.

Our team offers a broad range of effective treatment options for women suffering from uterine fibroids, endometriosis, abnormal uterine bleeding, ovarian cysts, to chronic pelvic pain.
